How is your Gut?

Over the festive season many people “over-indulge”, typically, eating too much and eating more of the “wrong” foods, as well as drinking too much as well. January comes and with it people have resolutions, goals or intentions to lose weight, get fit and go to the gym. But have you considered this question when thinking about your wellbeing: “how is your gut?” This may seem like a strange question, but having a balanced gut can avoid certain issues and even address current problems you may be experiencing.

Our gut is a long hollow tube running through our body, from mouth to anus. It has many names including gastrointestinal tract and digestive tract. The gut may sound like a simple part of the body, simply needed to eat and pass waste, but it is a lot more complicated and significant than this. “Our digestive system is the body equivalent of an oil refinery. It processes raw material to produce fuel that powers every cell in our body and keeps oil of other system running”

 

Here’s how it works in a nutshell:

  1. The gut receives the food and other substances and its job is to digest this into small molecules that then are absorbed and transported into the blood stream to nourish the body.
  2. It destroys germs or makes condition difficult for germs to survive; therefore protects our body
  3. It disposes of waste such as indigestible parts of food, toxins and waste products of normal bodily processes and excreting them in stool

 

Digestion uses up lots of energy in the process of breaking down food. Our digestive system is also supported by 3 other organs, liver, pancreas and gallbladder.

In 400bc Hippocrates wrote that a bad digestion the root of all evils. He was on to something… 80% of our immune system resides in the gut; so you can see that the gut is not insignificant.

Unfortunately, not everyone takes care of their gut in the way it deserves and illness related to digestive system are rising fast, such as; constipation, diarrhoea, heartburn and bloating. Other type of problems varies from eczema, psoriasis, depression, lack of energy and the list goes on. Food intolerances are also commonplace and on the rise too! All of these health issues are affected and sometimes even caused by imbalance in the gut.

It is true that common sense steps are probably needed; do not eat in excess, eat the recommended intake of fibres, drink alcohol in moderation; avoid processed food high in sugar; exercise regularly and minimise stress. Due to our biochemistry and uniqueness, not necessarily the so labelled “good food” has a beneficial effect on everyone. Through kinesiology, I can test whether particular “innocent” foods are detrimental to your well-being.

Additionally, evidence shows that gut functioning can affect our emotional health and vice versa too. The emotional nature of our digestive system is noted by expressions such as “gut feelings”, “butterflies in the stomach” or simply feeling “gutted”. Good digestion promotes good feelings, calmness, optimism, vitality, energy and a clear mind. Bad digestion causes indigestion, bloating, heartburn, pain, discomfort, tiredness, feeling down, foggy mindedness/cannot think straight and more.

So whatever the time of year, I would encourage you to consider: “how is my gut?”

How Does Your Home Make You Feel?

 

“How does your home make you feel?” This may seem like a strange question but your home, your office or place of work, in-fact anywhere you spend time and your environment, affects you both physically and emotionally. There is a name for this; Geophatic stress. Geopathic Stress is the relationship between the earth’s energies and your wellbeing. You may have read about Geopathic Stress before in my blog, from contributor Andre Sutherland.

The more I have learned about how the energies of our manmade environment and even our homes themselves can impact us, the more I have felt drawn to helping people affected by geophatic, techno and physic-stress. I myself have embarked on studying and practicing Geomancy. If you find your home or your place of work is having a negative affect on you, or giving you a bad feeling, or it is not selling, is the family in conflict or people act out of character then it is likely you need to consider Geomancy.

To give you an example of this type of situation, let me tell you about the case of my friend, let’s call her Rita. She has been living in a particular property for 5-years. Rita likes the place but she has been feeling not particularly happy coming home. So, I offered my newly acquired skills in geomancy and went to visit.

She is a practitioner herself and at times she works from home.She is also a writer and instead of using her office she kept working from all the rooms in the house other than her office because she simply did not feel at ease there. My instinct went to trapped emotions perhaps left behind by clients. So, with all my tools – dowsing rods, wands, sage, crystals, singing bowls and more, I started work.

I started dowsing outside in the garden and found two ley lines – these are straight navigable energy paths and have spiritual significance. One was running through the house near the exterior wall in a straight line and the other on the other side of the house but through the conservatory. Furthermore I found near the conservatory there was underground water stagnation. When water flows through underground passages, fractures and fissures, it produces its own electromagnetic field, often high into microwave frequency. Furthermore, water carries emotions, feelings and if anything negative is trapped in the water, it is likely that it affects the house and the family addressed the water and the negative ley lines with earth acupuncture; later, I found out after the cleansing, that on that exact ley line time ago was running a train line.

I moved inside the house and interestingly the living room required a different adjustment. I was told that it needed some meditation by myself and my friend as there were some old stuck detrimental emotions stuck there. The emotions stuck in the living room were not from the clients but by the old tenant. She confirmed the dowsing and that the previous people living there and apparently they were not liked much by neighbours – they were not positive and were judgmental. We both sat down in meditation and asked whatever present to please move on to light and let the current family live in harmony.

Additionally, during the session I could see the aura of a member of my friend’s family who was present, getting lighter until it was clear and flowing. We know that the aura is a pulsating field of energy which surrounds living things and human bodies. The aura has different colours and the more healthy and connected we are, the brighter is the aura and it forms a sort of protection. The fact the family member’s aura became brighter showed that before this session she was under some type of stress. Our work helped the family member feel more at peace and become freer.

I continued my work through the rest of the house and nothing in particular was then reported, left some crystals permanently on the ley lines inside the house, I collected my tools, checked that the corrections were in place, re-adjusted the living room and after a cup of tea, went home.

In the evening I received an email from my friend saying that the energies were very good and she was happy. The member of the family I worked on the aura slept like a log all evening and night. The following week she texted saying that she loved the house and felt more comfortable and productive there and that for the first time in years she used the office and worked there for 7 hours

When thinking about your home, place of work or a family property, it is a good idea to consider the energies of the place.

There are many factors to take into consideration, starting from the personal history of your family, the predecessor in the property, where it is built, history of the site, health conditions of those that have lived there and more. Be Kind and Positive and Reap the Benefits

We hear from multiple sources about the importance of self-care. According to different forums “self care is the actions that individuals take for themselves, on behalf of and with others in order to develop, protect, maintain and improve their health, wellbeing or wellness.

Self-care seems to be the “trend” of 2018 and some people are using this term as a sweeping statement to cover hot-baths, beauty routines and indulgent meals. But we need to think about what self-care means to us personally, as individuals. We are biologically different so our needs also differ but self-care starts with a personal and conscious choice of wanting to live a more balanced and healthy life.

Big changes are not achieved overnight, but from one day to the other – it takes time and commitment, but you can be assured that big changes can happen and are achieved with small steps every day. For example, self-care may be about making time to keeping your body moving so your small step one day maybe deciding to walk up the stairs instead of taking a lift.

In my clinic I have noticed that almost everyone is willing to implement changes in their diet, physical activities, taking supplements or switching off the WiFi at night. However, if self-care means taking some time to meditate and I ask them to take time to sit, allowing themselves just to do nothing, I almost always receive this answer: “I do not know how to do that.”

Many people tend to feel guilty if they take time off away from their daily routines and activities. I believe this guilt is the result of living in a fast pasting and demanding society. Unfortunately our society does not teach us that health cannot be achieved with healthy diet and exercise alone. We are bombarded with messages that tell us to eat certain foods and exercise a certain way, but even if we follow all of this we can still be unwell and imbalanced.

It is essential that we learn to stop, sit down and allow ourselves to get in touch with our soul. At the start it is one of the most difficult exercises to do – we are almost scared to listen to our needs in case we find something we do not like about ourselves. However, as I always tell my clients, it is the most empowering moment in our life. There is nothing to be scared of because we all have faults as well as amazing gifts within us. Yes, from a personal experience it is hard to sit with pain, fears, anxiety but the reward is beyond recognition.

Until we acknowledge that the body and mind and soul are one it will be very difficult to live a balanced and healthy life. Caring about our wellbeing – be it physical, mental and spiritual self-care, is actually self-responsibility, for ourselves but also to those that love us.

What you Need to Know about Trauma and Cellular Memory

As we all know, our body is made-up of cells, but what you may not realise is that each of these individual cells holds and records information like a memory – we call this cellular memory. This means that every impactful experience that we have been through is imprinted into our cells. This imprint is left not only in our mind or in our nervous system, but also in every single cell in our body.

When someone has been through emotional turmoil you may have heard the expression: “it hit me hard” or “ I felt it with every fibre of my being.” Even if you didn’t know that cells have a memory, intuitively, you probably realised that they do on an unconscious level. What we’re describing here in these expressions is the physical reaction when something deeply significant happens to us and we have a cellular response to it.

Cellular memory means that trauma can have a long lasting or even delayed affect on our body, even if we have “worked through” the trauma psychologically. Insomnia, IBS, inflammatory diseases and more can be as a result of cellular memory after trauma. However, manifestation of traumas varies from person to person. What they all have in common is the impact on our immune system and therefore our health.

Trauma is an embodied experience. It lives in people’s bones, veins, arteries, tissues, muscles and organs. It’s in their cells, hearts and souls.

Some traumas are an obvious result from past experience like any type of abuse from neglect to sexual abuse. There are also less obvious types of traumas, but these are still capable of locking depression, generalized anxiety, or disturbed sleep patterns in place. People often associate trauma with emotional disturbance but traumas can also be the result of physical injuries.

Most people don’t realise that trauma can be trans-generational transmitted, or even carried down in the bloodline. Trauma can remain stuck at cellular level for a very long time and it is possible it may never be released. But it is important to identify trauma so that it can be addressed in some way.

It is important to consider is that every individual is unique and thanks to this uniqueness healing process varies too.

There are many amazing modalities to help releasing traumas, all incredible in their own rights. People may go to therapy talk therapy, or they might go to church, nature or any activity that might support them during their journey.

My own 7-years intense healing work, particularly focused to strengthen my body after cancer, meant I was strong enough to face, 35 years after it happened, the immense emotional trauma experienced in watching my biological mother dying in front of my eyes at the age of 16, which in many ways I link to the breast cancer I developed. Since the realisation, cleansing through painful moments and quite a fair amount of tears, something has shifted in my body and my energy’s field and now I feel somehow at home in own body.

It is never too late to think about working on releasing trauma.

As a Systematic Kinesiologist, I am trained to help release stressful emotions, traumas, negative thought patterns and behaviours that are causing us to behave in ways that are holding us back from living in full brightness. Negative energy is trapped in our Cellular Memory and we must aim to remove and release it if we are to move forward and live full, healthy, energised, peaceful, happy lives.

What are the benefits of yoga?

Yoga is a practice originated in India about 5,000 years ago and has been adapted in other countries in a variety of ways. Yoga is now commonplace in leisure centres, health clubs, schools, hospitals and surgeries. Yoga is a philosophy that emphasises the connection between mind and body. The yoga lifestyle has changed quite a bit since ancient times, but the essence of yoga remains the same, as does the ultimate goal: to find harmony with yourself and the world.

A yoga pose is called asana, based on the Sanskrit word for “seat”. Yoga poses are the building blocks of a physical yoga practice, and a gateway to a deeper understanding of the mind and body. Yoga poses were traditionally done in preparation for seated meditation, helping to strengthen the back and core and open up the hips to facilitate longer periods of sitting.

True to their origins, most poses have the name that ends with asana. Poses are often named for animals such as cobra, and objects whose shapes and characteristics inspire the pose, such as boat or warrior.

What are the principles of yoga?

  • Exercise: yoga routines can provide you with a full cardiac workout and increase your aerobic stamina. Sequences will always involve building up your body to be strong for the more challenging poses, then gently cooling it down in recovery postures. Rather than focussing on dramatically expending energy, yoga also emphasises the conservation of your body’s energy, so that after each session you have more energy than when you began.
  • Breathing: Yoga places a great importance on the breath as it is considered to be a bridge between the mind and the body. You need to be able to regulate the depth and duration of inhalation and exhalation of the breath. Yoga encourages breathing in and out through your nose. Yoga breathing techniques reinvigorate your body by maximising oxygen levels in the blood. This has a direct influence on your nervous system.
  • Relaxation: the yoga tradition recognises that regular relaxation releases tension and allows you to make new energy, even when you’re tired and overworked!
  • Balanced diet: it is all about healthy eating! The way we consume food will have an impact upon the body’s ability to digest and absorb nutrients.
  • Meditation: the yogic approach places great importance on positive thinking for sustaining mental wellbeing. Meditation techniques are used to consciously clear the mind of negative thought and emotions; it helps control and focus your mind away from impulsiveness.

What are the benefits of yoga?

Through research, yoga has been proven to help decrease stress, anxiety, insomnia, depression, and many other mental health issues. Yoga works by decreasing activity in the sympathetic nervous system, otherwise known as the “fight or flight” response, which is typically responsible for constricting blood vessels and raising heart rate and blood pressure.

In the past few years, yoga and other mind-body practices have been a topic of interest for researchers in the psychology field, exploring its benefits for individuals working to improve their psychological well being. There is an increasing number of communities, such as hospitals, rehab centres and transitional homes incorporating yoga into their programming for improving mental health in many individuals.

Have you tried?

Many people think that they need to be flexible to begin yoga, but that’s a little bit like thinking that you need to be able to play tennis in order to take tennis lessons! There are many different types of yoga, and yoga isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach. Some people are intimidated to practice yoga because they think they aren’t good enough or are discouraged that they don’t look like the cover of a yoga magazine in each pose. Although seeing a beautiful yoga pose is amazing, the point of yoga is how you feel in the pose and what works for your body. Everyone’s yoga practice is different and unique to them. Being present and in touch with your own body is one of the most important aspects of yoga. Don’t worry about anyone else.

Even if you only practice for one hour a week, you will experience the  benefits. If you can do more than that, you will certainly experience more benefits. Don’t let time constraints or unrealistic goals be an obstacle—do what you can and don’t worry about it. You will likely find that after a while your desire to practice expands naturally and you will find yourself doing more and more, like I did! During your first class, you probably won’t be able to touch your toes, never mind do a backbend. But if you stick with it, you’ll notice a gradual loosening, and eventually, seemingly impossible poses will become possible.

Can Skin Conditions be Treated with Kinesiology?

This week is National Eczema Week and this prompted me to write about how kinesiology can help skin conditions like eczema.

Anyone who has suffered with eczema, psoriasis or any other skin disease knows how problematic and painful issues with the skin can be. Cases range from mild to full-blown debilitating skin irritation.

For those who don’t know, eczema is a common skin condition that causes dry and flaky inflamed patches of skin that are very itchy and sore. The dry patches can split and bleed and need to be continually lubricated.

Eczema is also known as dermatitis. This skin condition, like many others, can come and go with bouts of flare-ups and remissions only for the eczema to resurface again. It can occur anywhere but usually affects the arms, inner elbows, backs of the knees, or the head – face and scalp.

Many people go to their GP with this skin condition and may even be referred to a specialist dermatologist. Conventional medicine recommends that the person avoid allergens or irritants and prescribes a variety of chemical emollients, creams and ointments to soothe the skin. If the skin is infected too, in some cases the skin may be treated with antibiotics. These routes can work for a time, but often they are unsuccessful and eczema can resurface later on again only for the person suffering to embark upon treatment again.

When looking at eczema as a Kinesiologist first of all I look at the liver function and see if there is any toxicity. I would also look at the digestive system for food intolerances and poor nutrient absorption and whether exposure to substances is causing an abnormal reaction from the immune system. For example is there a cosmetic or product the client is coming into contact with? I can also see if stress may also play a part in the reaction.

The root cause of eczema in babies can sometimes be traced back to breast milk and where the skin irritation is caused by food intolerance we would look at the diet and eliminate the food that may be causing the reaction.

In children suffering with eczema, as with adults, I would be testing for any other type of chemical or toxins present in the body caused by exposure.

I am trained to look at the different aspect of body in order to find the root cause of the problem to then take the appropriate steps needed to correct the imbalance.

One of my clients, let’s call her Natalie, was suffering with a bad case of eczema. When working with Natalie, I was able to identify that different layers were causing eczema in this young woman.

Liver cleansing was the first step taken and subsequent diet adjustment. During the treatment emotional components and geopathic stress showed up too. Taking the situation in steps, we managed to identify the real root cause of the energy blockage in the property and that was cleared. Immediately there was a sense of relief though it did not clear completely but strengthened and rebalanced the lady to a point that she was strong physically to address the emotional component.

For Natalie, it was a particularly strenuous journey but one that had a positive result with success.

As with Natalie’s case, rarely, if ever, there is one single solution to clear eczema. But, by working on the different layers causing the reaction means that symptom not only improves but also will correct itself for the long term and then clear forever!

Self Care and Inner Wisdom

Self-care is not a luxury, it’s a choice and it’s at the core of how we can better support ourselves through life’s ever changing journeys.

The wisdom is within and sometimes, especially in times of change stillness and gentleness are needed more than ever to be able access these gifts, and to replenish the sparkle and best of you. Replenishing your own cup means you’ll be a more magical version and better serve yourself (as well as those around you).

Transformation

We live in a culture that doesn’t support change. Most of us have been bought up in a world where menstruation and menopause is seen as a biological disadvantage, making women emotional and unreasonable. For most of us, Menarche (a girl’s first bleed) may not have been truly acknowledged or even celebrated. Often, there isn’t much guidance around this Rite of Passage.

It may have been a welcoming initiation into Womanhood and in many tribal traditions a young woman’s menarche would be celebrated as part of a community gathering. A simple ceremony can be created and there are many ways that this or any transition can be celebrated or honoured.

We live in a world where ‘PMS’, perimenopause and menopause are viewed as annoyance and an inconvenience (don’t get me wrong it’s the real deal!) but our essence along with those pesky hormones deserve nourishment and there are ways to support this. Time out, holistic therapies including massage, acupuncture, kinesiology and homeopathy help ease and support these transitions without suppressing feelings of grief and other emotions.

Plus, it can be a time of profound transformation and exploration and often our body’s way of telling us to go within, reconnect and be with ourselves.

Just as the seasons of the year, a woman’s cycle and life journey has seasons within it. It applies to menstruating and non-menstruating women. Moving through inner Winter, Spring, and Summer, Autumn and back to Winter. There are also stages within a woman’s journey that sit within a season for a period at a time. Each phase gifts insight, resources and challenges that help you grow.

1%. Can you give just 1% more for yourself today? Surrender a teeny bit or choose to create more space for what is needed. Dedicating self-care and an extra dose of love when needed the most, whether it is an extra few moments snuggling under the duvet, being gentler and more forgiving with you or enjoying a guided yoga nidra meditation! It really doesn’t have to be the image of the most calm and a serene looking woman sat in lotus pose meditating for an hour (meditation can feel messy and emotional!) and it can take all forms. It could be a few moments of mindfully softening the breath and the chest, allowing the heart and body to ‘ahhhhhhh’ it out.

Some of the things that I do; grab a spot in my favourite, snuggest corner of the sofa, I surround myself with a blanket and lots of cushions, enjoy an English brew (cinnamon and cloves is a must!) in a pretty cup and put on one of my favourite playlists (currently the gorgeous sound of Sirgun Kaur), or I’ll go for a walk in the park in my warm layers, pop my phone on aeroplane mode, and know that the world around me will not fall apart if I take 10 minutes out for a little restoration.

Also, find and be with women that lift and nourish your spirit!
